چکیده

The aim of this study is to compare the effect of the two major classes of methods used to determine the attenuation map, i.e. non-uniform versus uniform, on 3D brain PET clinical studies based on qualitative assessment as well as absolute and relative quantitative volume of interest (VOI)based analysis. The results revealed statistically significant differences between the six attenuation correction methods. It was concluded that non-uniform attenuation correction is the gold standard for quantitative 3D PET. It should, however, be recognised that methods, which do not require a transmission scan, allow to reduce patient scanning time, increase scanner throughput and avoid misalignment between emission and pre-injection transmission scanning. To this end, derivation of the attenuation map from already acquired magnetic resonance images looks promising.

Atlas-guided non-uniform attenuation correction in cerebral 3D PET imaging.

Photon attenuation in tissues is the primary physical degrading factor limiting both visual qualitative interpretation and quantitative analysis capabilities of reconstructed Positron Emission Tomography (PET) images. This study investigates the implementation and applicability of transmission atlas-guided attenuation correction in cerebral 3D PET imaging, thus eliminating the need for acquisit...

Comparison of state-of-the-art atlas-based bone segmentation approaches from brain MR images for MR-only radiation planning and PET/MR attenuation correction

Introduction: Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging has emerged as a valuable tool in radiation treatment (RT) planning as well as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging owing to its superior soft-tissue contrast. Due to the fact that there is no direct transformation from voxel intensity in MR images into electron density, itchr('39')s crucial to generate a pseudo-CT (Computed Tomography) image ...

Calculation of Positron Distribution in the Presence of a Uniform Magnetic Field for the Improvement of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Imaging Using GEANT4 Toolkit

Introduction Range and diffusion of positron-emitting radiopharmaceuticals are important parameters for image resolution in positron emission tomography (PET). In this study, GEANT4 toolkit was applied to study positron diffusion in soft tissues with and without a magnetic field for six commonly used isotopes in PET imaging including 11C, 13N, 15O, 18F, 68Ga, and 82Rb. Materials and Methods GEA...
